We are writing to you to tell you more about our opportunity to serve in China! It’s official, in the middle of November, we will be moving to the outskirts of Beijing. Serving with New Hope Foundation, in partnership with Show Hope, is allowing us to work in our current fields directly with orphans with medical needs. Stephen will assist the directors with volunteer management, IT, and general administration as some of the long-term staff roles are changing. Jo will continue working as a pediatric physical therapist, helping to address some of the physical and medical needs of the children in their Beijing care center.
The New Hope organization was founded by a doctor and her husband, Joyce and Robin Hill. The Hills originally opened their home to show the “least of these” in their community, medically challenged orphans, the redemptive love of God. The organization has grown to include 5 care centers throughout China, with the goal: “to comfort always, relieve often, and save sometimes”, where they help children receive medical care to qualify for adoption or provide comfort to those children receiving palliative care. The Hills founded the organization with the goal to treat every child like they were their own. When we visited in September 2016, we were thrilled to see grace-filled, Christlike care and could easily envision ourselves working with the long-term staff and kids. We are so excited to work alongside people who are caring for these children so well.
At this time, we’re committed to serving with New Hope for “at least a year”, and would love for you to partner with us. Please please please pray for us; to do our jobs well, to learn Mandarin and survive Beijing winter, and ultimately that the orphans we have the privilege of serving would know the love of God. We’re setting up a blog, to allow people to see what we’re up to and follow us more specifically.
We also need to raise funds – to allow us to continue paying the minimum payments on our student loans, pay for some in-country costs (health insurance, food, a phone) and travel costs. New Hope has graciously offered us room and board, in one of the care centers outside of Beijing (where we will happily take visitors!). We estimate needing to raise $16,437 to provide for our needs for the current year. It has been humbling to think about raising funds for our expenses, however we’ve been encouraged to think about it as another way for our friends and family to participate in caring for orphans.
We have been given the opportunity to partner with a missionary sending and support organization called Artists in Christian Testimony Intl (however in closed countries such as China, we must use the organization’s other name: Artists for Community Transformation Intl).
